Billy Joel grew up in the Long Island suburbs and took classical piano lessons from an early age. While still in high school, he joined the group Echoes - the first in a series of bands he worked with during the next 5 years. His first solo record 'Cold Spring Harbor' was released in 1971. In 1973, 'Piano Man' gained him wide attention, and he was named 'Cashbox' magazine's best new male vocalist in 1974. His first platinum record was 'The Stranger' and his first Grammy was won for 'Just the Way You Are'. His huge success during the 80s included a string of outstanding records, multiple awards and hit music videos. Divorced from Elizabeth Weber, he married model Christie Brinkley in 1985. 'An Innocent Man', released that same year included 'Uptown Girl' written about Brinkley. In 1991, he was given the Grammy Living Legend award and is still a top concert draw today. His interest is now in composing classical music. He has one child (from his 4 year marriage to Brinkley). His daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, was named after piano legend Ray Charles.
